Through every story comes a voice. Feature stories are a great opportunity to help the voiceless tell their story. Throughout the four years I have been apart of the Pitt Media staff, my goal has been to tell the stories of those within the hallways of Pittsburg High School.

It’s difficult to go through the everyday challenges that come with high school, but for senior Jocelyn Bolte, keeping her grades up and getting to class on time hasn’t always been her biggest issues.

Coming out: An inside looking into being in/out of the closet

As sophomore Meagan Wood comes home from school, she quickly runs up to her room, plugs in her headphones, and writes “I’m gay” repeatedly in her journal. While she’s built up the courage to say this sentence a million times to her friends, she’s never been able to say it to her parents. 

For Wood, keeping her sexuality a secret to her family can be a burden.

Painting with a passion: Senior Audrey Goode curates a portfolio

After the second bell rings, senior Audrey Goode walks to her Independent Study art class, gathers her materials, sits down and begins painting segments of her latest art project.

Self taught dancer lands a spot on dance team

At the age of five years old, I'sis Thomas developed a love for dance. As a child, she often spent her time prancing around her bedroom to Michael Jackson’s music videos and creating her own choreography. 

Because of her passion for dance, Thomas decided to audition for dance team her sophomore year.

Masks for Change

On June 15, senior Emma Fischer began selling homemade masks in order to support the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. 

Once news of George Floyd, an African American man who was murdered by a police officer, appeared in the media, with protests beginning not long afterwards, Fischer felt as though she could do something to show her support.

For most people, dressing up in costumes can be deemed as weird, but for sophomore Lexi Ketchum and a whole community of cosplayers, it's something to be passionate about.

As senior Ainsley Balthazor approaches the stage at Julie Fest, a woman’s and arts festival in Joplin, she feels a rush of adrenaline runs through her as she picks up her instrument and sings into the microphone.

Life beyond high school: the price of early graduation

At every pep assembly, the students of PHS gather together to participate in the class yell. Although there are 203 freshmen, 230 sophomores, and 199 juniors, a small number of seniors stand in the bleachers to cheer for their class.

The process behind canceling

This upcoming Tuesday is already setting itself up to be another cold day. 

The National Weather Service (NWS) projects a high of 24°F, a wind chill value as low as five and a possible snow accumulation of 1-2 inches, creating hopes for a snow day.

An inside look into PASS Academy

In May of 2018, Pittsburg Alternative School Setting (PASS) Academy opened its doors to the students of Pittsburg High School, (PHS). 

This program is designed for students who may have various difficulties in a larger school setting where they are able to work successfully and at their own pace.

Bathrooms for all: equal access for every student

Like many transgender people, determinating which public restroom to use is a battle I face every day. I question my safety and how others will perceive me depending on which restroom I choose, not to mention the state laws.

For as long as I can remember, my science teachers have always told me to recycle by saving paper and using as little plastic as possible in order to save the environment. But as the years went by, I started to realize that although we are encouraged to use as little plastic as possible, a majority of everyday items we use in schools are plastic.

How Trisha Paytas’ “Coming Out” video negatively effects the trans community

American Youtuber Trisha Paytas is well known for her clickbait and controversial content that range from topics about plastic surgery, race, hoarding, and most recently, gender identity.

Actor Elliot Page comes out as transgender

“My joy is real, but it is also fragile.” 

These are the words that Canadian actor and producer Elliot Page used in a letter he wrote on his Twitter and Facebook page announcing that he is transgender on Dec. 1.

Protesting for Equality: How the Black Lives Matter Movement affects Pittsburg

More than 400 citizens of Pittsburg and surrounding areas participated in a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest on June 8 at Immigrant Park, two of whom were senior Emma Annan-Noonoo and her father, K.O. Noonoo. Both spoke at the protest.

Culinary Club and Student Council hosts food drive

Between Nov. 30 to Dec. 11, Culinary Club and Student Council will be collaborating on hosting a food drive where students that are involved in clubs and extracurricular activities can donate to Club 209A and Creating Legacies.

JAG-K takes over recycling 

As a way to start off the new school year, students involved in the Jobs For American Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) program have taken on the responsibility of collecting recycled goods for the SEK Recycling Center.

Junior Emily Wachter travels to Washington, D.C. as Tourette ambassador

From March 2-4, junior Emily Wachter will be representing Kansas and Missouri as an ambassador at the Tourettes association of America (TAA) in Washington, D.C.

Jones, Kramer compete at FCCLA State Leadership Conference

Earlier this month, juniors Logan Jones and Felicity Kramer traveled to Wichita to compete at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Kansas State Leadership Conference from April 7-9.

Instagram updates app, removes ability to count likes

Last week, Instagram announced it will run an experiment where like count will be removed in order to bring a more positive atmosphere to the app.

Club 209A, Leadership Class work together on donation drive

As the holidays begin to approach us, faculty members are taking charge to aid students that don’t have their basic needs met at home. In order to do so, Club 209A, a counseling and admin led organization, are running several donation drives to help those in need.

Ahead of the Game

From the age of four, sophomore Madden Petty has spent a majority of her life playing basketball. Over the years, she has received multiple awards, including an all-state honorable mention. 

This year, she has more to add to her list. In December of 2018, the Sports in Kansas organization placed Madden top five in the state.

In the spotlight 

As junior Emily McGown approaches the tennis court, her palms start to sweat and her heart began to pound in her chest, causing her to freeze before getting into procession. Despite this, she serves the ball to her opponent.

PHS Hosts Wrestling

SEK League Tournament

For the first time in seven years, Pittsburg High School will be hosting the boys SEK League Duals on Feb. 13. 

The event consists of seven schools in the SEK area. Each school gets an opportunity to host the tournament each year based on alphabetical order.
